A 39mm festoon bulb designed for direct replacement in this application (often used for interior or trunk lights).  The 3028 LEDs are perfect for applications where you may want a little more light but want a crsiper light.  The 5050 LEDs are much brighter with the 6x5050 LED producing the most light at 72 lumens.

LEDs produce little or no heat over halogen bulbs and will not burn out if touched.  They provide instant on/off illumination and should outlast any halogen equivalent.
