2004.5+ Volvo S40/V50 HID issues
There are a number of significant issues with installing HIDs in the S40/V50. There appears to be no pattern but some cars will simply accept the HIDs without issue, 35w or 50w, others will not work at all, and the majority will work with a battery harness or capacitor harness or both.
Currently turning the DRLs off helps on some cars and some it doesn’t. The ultimate solution is to have the car flashed for HIDs but that is something most dealers, if any, won’t do unless they are installing the OEM HIDs in the car.
SharpHID is currently testing some ballasts that are designed to work with cars with these issues and are said to replicate the “feel” of halogen bulbs to the car. We will have some results on the S40s within the month and will keep everyone posted.

If you position your headlight control to the full on position (position 2) there should not be any issue.
